- Learning Objectives:
- Learn how to identify common mistakes made in daily practice.
- Learn tips that make managing difficult cases easier.
- Learn when a case truly needs to be referred.
- Course Summary/Description: Do you love attending CE lectures that take a deep dive into the pathophysiology of a single disease, hoping to glean a few pearls you can use in daily practice? If the answer is yes, this talk is not for you. We will discuss my experience transitioning from a general practitioner to an emergency doctor in a large specialty practice. The learning curve was exponential, and we will explore some of the things I wish I had known but have learned during my time at UVS. Topics will include: steroid dosing and usage, interpreting anemia and thrombocytopenia, sedation tips, tricks for difficult urinary obstructions, and much more. My goal is to pack our hour with practical pearls you can immediately use in daily practice.
- Qualifications and Experience: Dr. Ellen Scott was born and raised in Syracuse, New York, and obtained her DVM from Cornell University in 2000. Seeking escape from the gloomy lake-effect winters for which Central New York is famous, she followed the lure of warmer weather and left New York for a job in Alexandria, Virginia. Family ties drew her back to New York, and she settled in the Albany area in 2001, working at several local veterinary practices. As a busy general practitioner, she developed a particular interest in emergency and critical care and was thrilled at the prospect of honing her skills at Upstate Veterinary Specialties. Dr. Scott has been with Upstate Veterinary Specialties since 2014.
