Register for Integrative medicine webinar: Equine complex vertebral malformation April 18th
NYSVMS
The Integrative Medicine webinar: Equine Complex Vertebral Malformation (ECVM) will be held April 18th 7-8 PM presented by Karen Gellman, DVM. ECVM is a congenital syndrome in domestic horses whose prevalence has been increasingly recognized in many horse breeds over the past 20 years. It is likely the underlying cause of most C5-C7 facet arthritis in horses, as well as many other neuro-musculo-skeletal problems, severe undiagnosable pain, behavior issues and training difficulties. It’s likely most equine vets have been seeing cases for years but did not appreciate the underlying malformations that cause lower cervical pathology because until recently, it was only diagnosed post-mortem, and most necropsies do not go sufficiently deep to find the anomalies on the axial spine itself.
Linchpin gene in a rare liver cancer: a new avenue toward therapy?
Cornell University CVM
Cornell researchers have identified a gene that plays a crucial role in promoting tumor growth and survival in fibrolamellar carcinoma (FLC), a rare and devastating liver cancer. This discovery opens a new avenue for therapeutic development for a disease that currently has no standard of care besides surgery. FLC predominantly affects teens and young adults with otherwise healthy livers. Being difficult to diagnose, the majority of FLC cases are detected at advanced metastatic stages, ruling out surgical options and leading to poor survival rates.
States begin to restrict cattle imports from those with influenza cases
AVMA
In an effort to prevent domestic cattle from being exposed to highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI, more specifically avian influenza Type A H5N1), 17 states have restricted cattle importations from states where the virus is known to have infected dairy cows: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, and West Virginia.
Veterinary students thrive at SAVMA Symposium in Tennessee
AVMA
The 2024 Student AVMA (SAVMA) Symposium, co-hosted by Lincoln Memorial University and the University of Tennessee, brought together nearly 1,000 veterinary students and other attendees from across the nation from March 14-17 at the Knoxville Convention Center. Along with an exciting exhibit hall, the symposium featured educational day trips to the Tennessee Aquarium, Dollywood theme park, and Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. Wet laboratory topics included equine limb lacerations, rodent handling techniques, and dairy calf processing. Attendees could choose from lectures on clinical topics such as fluid therapy in small animals, antimicrobial stewardship, treatment of aggressive patients, and feline diabetes.

Feeding horses with equine asthma
The Horse
My veterinarian just diagnosed my 23-year-old mare with heaves. What’s the best feed and forage for her? I know, ideally, being on pasture is best for the condition but, unfortunately, she can only be turned out at night because of an allergy to midges.
