Designed specifically for early-career veterinarians, this RACE-approved program (7.5 CE hours) offers personalized guidance through one-on-one mentoring sessions, helping you build confidence and clarity in managing your finances. In the mentorship, you’ll:

· Work directly with a student debt expert to understand federal loan updates and optimize your repayment strategy.

· Gain control of household cash flow and learn how and where to invest for the future.

NYSVMS is offering 10 full scholarships for this transformative program, running January 13 – April 13, 2025. Eligible participants must be NYSVMS members who graduated from veterinary school within the last 5 years. Time commitment: 1-2 hours per week. Application deadline is: December 15th. NYSVMS recruiting for class of 2025 Power of 10

NYSVMS is currently recruiting for the Power of 10 class of 2025. This is a national initiative designed to cultivate leadership capacity in grads 15 years or less from veterinary school who are current NYSVMS members and provide learning experiences that will enrich the individual and benefit the individual’s practice, community and profession. The program provides NYSVMS members with 4 leadership development sessions. NYSVMS provides the experts and covers all meeting and travel expenses for participants to attend sessions. The topics are: wellbeing, what to do when OPD knocks on your door, restructuring student debt and financial planning and the Insights Discovery program. College launches the Veterinary Investigation & Leadership Program

Two of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s widely respected summer research programs have joined forces to create a single, comprehensive opportunity for veterinary students. The new ten-week program’s inaugural session will run from June 2 through August 10 of 2025. The Leadership Program and Veterinary Investigator Program (VIP) will collectively be known as the Veterinary Investigation & Leadership Program (VILP), and effectively combines the unique strengths of each former component into one, fully integrated program that aligns with the college’s broader goal of preparing future leaders in the veterinary field who can navigate both scientific challenges and organizational leadership roles.

How Colorado became ground zero for veterinary midlevel practitioner debate

A group in Colorado—All Pets Deserve Vet Care, funded in part by the Dumb Friends League and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)—is proposing a new veterinary role called a veterinary professional associate (VPA). The group gathered enough citizen signatures to put a measure to establish this new role before voters on Colorado’s November 5th general election ballot.

The experimental leader: Thriving in a rapidly changing world

Organizational psychologist Adam Grant says leaders in a post-pandemic world must cultivate adaptability, confident humility, and an experimental mindset, while also ensuring the psychological wellbeing of their employees to avoid burnout. One way of carrying out these practices is for leaders to get into the habit of anticipating problems and mistakes before they occur, according to Grant, who suggests holding “pre-mortems” where the questions are asked, “A year from now, what will we wish we had done differently?” or “Assume what we’re about to do fails. What would happen that would make this not work?”

My pregnant mare tends to be a bit of an “air fern.” We’ve done a good job keeping her at a reasonable weight for most of her pregnancy, but I know her nutritional needs will increase in her final months of gestation. I’m not sure how to strike that balance between getting her the nutrients she needs while not letting her get too heavy. I worry about how her weight might impact the foaling process, not to mention obesity putting her at greater risk of laminitis.
