FDA lays off bird flu leadership, among steep cuts to senior veterinarians
The top veterinarians overseeing the bird flu response at the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine were laid off on Tuesday, as part of sweeping cuts ordered by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to the nation’s health agencies. Out of some 10,000 workers laid off Tuesday across the Department of Health and Human Services, more than 130 staff were cut in the FDA’s veterinary center, multiple officials said. The center oversees medicines and food given in the U.S. to animals, ranging from pets to cattle.
Michael Kotlikoff named Cornell’s 15th president
The Cornell Board of Trustees today voted to appoint Michael I. Kotlikoff, who has served as interim president since July 2024, Cornell’s 15th president, effective immediately. “Over the last eight months as interim president – and his 25 years on Cornell’s faculty – Mike has demonstrated the leadership and vision that the university needs right now,” said Board of Trustees Chair Kraig Kayser, MBA ’84. “His institutional knowledge, expertise and passion for our shared mission will continue to help him lead Cornell through a period of great uncertainty and provide much-needed continuity at a critical time.”
Avian influenza discovered in NYS bobcats

Avian influenza – which has devastated poultry flocks, wildlife populations and increasingly poses a public health risk – has now been confirmed in wild bobcats in New York state.In a new study, published March 25 in the Journal of Wildlife Diseases, researchers tracked live bobcats in the state and found widespread exposure to avian flu, with evidence of bobcats surviving but also succumbing to the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain. The research further documents increasing avian influenza cases in mammals and underscores the importance of proactive wildlife disease monitoring.
Biomarker for most common cancer in young men confirmed

Cornell researchers have confirmed that a previously identified biomarker for detecting the presence of malignant testicular germ cell tumors – the most common solid cancers in young men – has the potential to improve patient outcomes through early detection, possibly even prenatally.
Application for Federal Income-Driven Repayment Plans Reactivated

After a February ruling from the 8th Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, the Department of Educationremoved all Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) plan applications. Federal student loan servicers also paused processing of previously submitted applications. The temporary pause prevented all federal borrowers from applying for any IDR plan, recertifying their required income information for IDR plans, or in some cases, earning any IDR forgiveness or Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) credit. About a month later, the IDR application is back. Borrowers are now able to submit an application for ICR, IBR, and PAYE repayment plans.

Viticus Group conference, training center coming to Nashville

The WVC Annual Conference, one of the longest running veterinary conferences in the country, is expanding from its Las Vegas home to Nashville, Tennessee, potentially by next summer. Plans for WVC Nashville were announced during the 2025 WVC Annual Conference, held March 2–5. The decision to host a second annual WVC meeting and open a training center in a more Eastern location is a “pivotal moment in the organization’s nearly 100-year history,” according to the Viticus Group, the organization that hosts the WVC conference.
