Nominations for 2025 NYSVMS Awards due by July 31st
The NYSVMS awards program is the way to honor veterinarians and their important work in NYS. NYSVMS confers five awards annually. Nominations no longer have to be approved by the regionals. The person nominating must fill out a simple 1-page nomination form and include the nominee’s resume as well as a letter of recommendation. These nominations are then reviewed by the NYSVMS Awards Committee for the awards listed below. The committee chair then presents its recommendations to the executive board which gives final approval. Nominations for the 2025 Awards are being accepted now through July 31, 2025. How mosquito control could exacerbate public health disparities
Special districts established to control mosquitos in parts of Florida claim significantly more funding and expertise than county-run programs, a new analysis finds a new analysis co-authored by a Cornell public health expert. But because special districts serve geographically limited and typically wealthier areas, they may also contribute to inequities, especially amid declining state and federal funding for public health initiatives.
AAVMC continues search for CEO after Reid declines position
Dr. Stuart Reid, selected to lead the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC), will now stay on as head of the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in London for another three years. The May announcement said, “The agreement was made in recognition of the complex and evolving challenges currently facing veterinary education and the wider higher education sector.”
Do dogs really resemble their owners?

For decades, people have joked that dogs look and act like their owners. This idea, long considered anecdotal, now has scientific backing. A systematic review of 15 studies explored the evidence for physical and personality similarities between dogs and their human companions. The results support 2 major hypotheses: people choose dogs that look like them, and over time, dogs and owners grow similar in personality.
