Maternal antibodies a double-edged sword in vaccinated newborns
Scientists at the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) have found that administering a rotavirus vaccine to newborn mice via a shot, rather than an oral dose, increases its efficacy, particularly for at-risk newborns. “This is especially important for infants in low- and middle-income countries, where the current rotavirus vaccine doesn’t work as well,” said Dr. Sarah Caddy, assistant professor with the Baker Institute for Animal Health and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.
Wildfire smoke, regenerative ag: Cornell Atkinson-EDF research aids people and planet
In the past 20 years, extreme wildfires have more than doubled, causing destruction to those directly impacted and spreading air pollution across borders and even continents. Outdoor air pollution, and the disease it engenders, is estimated to cause roughly 8 million deaths globally each year. A team of scientists from Cornell and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) are working to understand how air pollutants from dust and wildfires have changed over time, from 1850 to today, to improve predictions of future air pollution.
Inflation continues to dampen gains in veterinarian salaries, fewer new grads entering full-time employment
While the average annual income of U.S. veterinarians has been climbing over the last five years, real income—or the amount adjusted for inflation—tells a different story. “What we’ve seen over the last three or four years is that once you account for the impact of inflation, it started to come back down. And really, [for the average U.S. veterinarian,] salaries today, in real—or inflation-adjusted terms—are roughly where they were in about 2004,” said Dr. Chris Doherty, assistant director of strategic business research and outreach in the AVMA Veterinary Economics Division.
‘AI will not replace humans’
AVMA
From conference sessions to industry professionals, it’s no longer a question of whether to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into veterinary practice, but how. At the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) annual conference, held September 11-13 in Chicago, three sessions explored ways to leverage AI in veterinary practice for smarter marketing, streamlined workflow, and personnel management.

Insects could help turn farm food waste into sustainable livestock feed at industrial scale
DVM360
Researchers have found a sustainable and large-scale way to turn farm food waste into animal feed using black soldier fly larvae. In a study published in theJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture Reports, scientists from Kent University in Canterbury, England tested a novel bio-conversion unit (BCU) designed to produce black soldier larvae at an industrial scale for use as livestock feed additive.
Is it okay to ride my ulcer-prone horse after feeding?
The Horse
I’ve always been taught to not ride a horse right after it’s been fed. However, I have a mare who has gastric ulcers, and my veterinarian recommended that I feed her prior to riding (specifically, alfalfa). So which is it—feed or don’t feed before riding?
