Deadly feline coronavirus variant has been present in the U.S. for over a decade

Cornell researchers have discovered that a lethal variant of feline coronavirus, previously thought to be limited to a devastating 2023 outbreak in Cyprus that killed thousands of cats, has in fact appeared in the United States, raising concerns about future large-scale outbreaks in vulnerable cat populations. The findings were published in the March 6 issue of the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery by a cohort of researchers at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Delaying vaccination for hepatitis B, an incurable disease that is particularly lethal when contracted around birth, increases infections among newborns and decreases their survival rates and quality of life, according to a new study in JAMA Pediatrics. The longer the delay after birth, the study found, the higher the cost in human life and health care, with estimates ranging from $16 million to $370 million depending on the age at first vaccination and adherence to vaccination schedules.
Large dogs spend more time in shelters, report says

The median length of stay until adoption for large dogs at animal shelters is three to seven days longer than medium and small dogs, respectively, according to the Hill’s Pet Nutrition’s “2026 State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report: Spotlight on Large Dogs.” In its fourth year, the latest report is the first to focus on a specific population in animal shelters.
