Who provides help and when?
Financial consultants are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. EST. Any callers requesting Financial Assist services outside those hours will receive a follow-up call from a financial
consultant the next business day.
After speaking with a financial consultant, if the issue requires additional preparation, planning or more specialized financial assistance, the financial consultant offers the participant an appointment with one
of our qualified financial counselors for a detailed telephonic consultation.
Appointments with our financial counselors are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST and typically last about an hour.
There is no limit to the consultation length or restrictions on repeated service use.
Where appropriate, counselors send the participant information to review or worksheets to complete before their scheduled session. On the day and time of the appointment, the counselor telephones the
participant to begin the session. After the appointment, the counselor emails the participant a summary of goals and steps, along with any additional applicable educational materials and a quality survey.
All of our financial counselors hold certification as an Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC), accredited through the Association for Financial Counseling, Planning and Education (AFCPE), which requires the
completion of 15 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEU) and an annual renewal fee.
Additionally, they must successfully complete 123 to 136 hours of training to reach this qualification.
These training hours cover topics including:
• Consumer rights and responsibilities
• Spending plans and budgeting
• Debt management and bankruptcy
• Creditor policies and practices
• Challenging issues
• Counseling principles and practices
