Michael Capel, DVM ’00 named AABP president
Cornell University CVM
Michael Capel, DVM ’00, credits the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) with teaching him two lessons that fundamentally shaped his career: the importance of analytical thinking and a love of dairy production medicine. “What Cornell really helped me understand was the importance of thinking critically about the things that came across my path,” he said. “No one is able to prepare you for absolutely everything you will see in the field, but Cornell gave me the tools and resources I needed to excel in this field.” This year, Capel began a term as president of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP), an international association of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and veterinary students interested in bovine medicine.
Making sense of the mystery illness found across the US
AVMA
As of early December, cases of canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC) have been seen by veterinarians in multiple states. The exact number remains unknown as requirements for veterinarians to report CIRDC to their state animal health officials are highly variable. Further hampering reporting is that several bacteria and viruses can contribute to CIRDC, and that, by the time a dog does get tested, if the causative agent is a virus, it may have already passed the point of being detectable.
New drug calms cats during transportation, veterinary visits
AVMA
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this November approved Bonqat, a nerve pain medication for cats to alleviate acute anxiety and fear associated with transportation and veterinary visits. Bonqat is the first FDA-approved animal drug containing pregabalin, which is used in human medicine as an anticonvulsant and to treat neural pain. The drug is administered orally as a single dose of 5 mg/kg (0.1mL/kg) approximately 1.5 hours before traveling or a veterinary visit and can be given for two consecutive days, according to a November 17 announcement by the FDA.
FDA extends comment period for draft guidance on certain antimicrobial drugs
DVM360
Officials with the FDA have extended the comment period for draft guidance for industry (GFI) on defining durations for the use of certain antimicrobial drugs for animals, in response to requests from stakeholders. The comment period for Draft GFI #273 is now scheduled to close on January 5, 2024. Draft GFI #273, Defining Durations of Use for Approved Medically Important Antimicrobial Drugs Fed to Food-Producing Animals, was released September 25, 2023. At that time, there were nearly 100 approved applications for animal drugs. The GFI provides recommendations on how sponsors of animal drugs without a defined duration of use can voluntarily establish a defined duration of use for certain antimicrobial therapies that are considered medically important.
Can my horse eat hay with preservatives?
The Horse
This year was difficult for harvesting hay, so the only hay I could get for my herd of horses has had preservative sprayed on it to prevent mold growth. Should I be concerned about this? Is it safe for them to consume? Harvesting high-quality hay can be challenging for horse owners. To cut and bale premium hay, it must be cut at the right time, dried quickly, and baled at the correct moisture, then moved out of the elements and into storage. Although this sounds straightforward, it can be challenging because it relies heavily on weather conditions. In seasons that have a lot of precipitation, baling adequately dried hay becomes an issue. However, for horse hay, it is crucial that the bales not contain mold and are adequately dried.
