Beloved college mentor “Dr. E-K” and husband give back to CVM
If you’re planning on holding a meeting with Dr. Kathy Earnest-Koons in the café area of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), plan for a few interruptions. It’s clear that Earnest-Koons, or “Dr. E-K” knows pretty much everyone who walks by. This is partly because she has spent decades studying, teaching and mentoring at the college. But it also certainly comes from her gregarious personality, which has made her a favorite with students, faculty and staff across CVM.

USDE allows COE to accredit distance-education programs
AVMA
The AVMA Council on Education (COE) now has federal approval to include distance learning within its scope of recognition. The COE made the request on January 8 and the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) approved it immediately. Many veterinary colleges nationwide have already been using distance education, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Upon seeking guidance from the USDE on how to handle distance learning, the COE had two options: pursue expansion of COE’s scope of recognition to include distance education, or advise veterinary colleges to remove it from their curricula or risk having their accreditation withdrawn.
Veterinary community unites as California wildfires rage
AVMA
The devastating wildfires burning through the Los Angeles metropolitan area and surrounding regions since January 7 have killed at least 28 people, forced over 200,000 residents to evacuate, and damaged or destroyed nearly 16,000 homes and buildings as of January 23. More than 40,000 acres have so far been consumed by the fires, fueled by dry conditions and hurricane-strength Santa Ana winds reaching upwards of 100 miles per hour. The Eaton and Pacific Palisades wildfires have been particularly destructive, largely expected to rank among the top five worst in California’s history.

Tips for simplifying ophthalmic exam in general practice
DVM360
When it comes to ophthalmic examinations, can be a scary experience for veterinarians. However, although the interpretations of findings can be challenging, the examination that leads to the interpretations follows a logical, anatomical order that does not necessarily require expensive equipment. Ron Ofri, DVM, PhD, DECVO, explained that the most important factors of the exam are not ophthalmic, such as darkening the exam room, a magnifying loupe, and a strong source of focal light.
The effects of longeing on your horse’s joints
The Horse
Longeing horses is a common practice among trainers and owners in a variety of equestrian disciplines. Whether used for starting a young horse under saddle, or advancing the training of a competition horse, researchers say it’s important to consider longeing’s effects. Individuals must understand the biomechanics of how a horse turns and use the best methods to support joint health and the horse’s career longevity.
