Sports medicine service receives residency program award
The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF), in collaboration with the American Kennel Club (AKC), has awarded the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine its second annual AKC/AKC CHF Canine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency Program Award. Launched in 2024, the program expands the number of specialists trained to care for athletic dogs, working dogs and any dog benefiting from rehabilitation guided by a sports medicine expert. To be considered, veterinary residency programs approved by the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation apply and are selected as deserving through a competitive review by subject matter experts.
SAVMA delegates adopt guidelines to foster respectful meeting dialogue
At the Student AVMA (SAVMA) House of Delegates’ (HOD) most recent meeting, delegates adopted the Accountable Space Communication Guidelines into the SAVMA HOD manual. The guidelines, authored by SAVMA Wellbeing Officer Rebecca Michelin, a fourth-year student at the University of Prince Edward Island Atlantic Veterinary College, set expectations for respectful and inclusive discussion during SAVMA HOD meetings. They include principles such as listening actively, recognizing privilege, challenging ideas with care, and honoring confidentiality.
Making food security more meaningful for greater buy-in
AVMA
Investor Gilberto Gandra says more professional disciplines join in One Health discussions or include veterinarians in the broad range of global food security efforts is that they don’t know what One Health means or all the roles that animal health experts might play. That’s because those doing the work don’t necessarily know how to convey the importance of their message or make it meaningful for potential partners, said Gandra, founder and partner of RadiusVC, a venture capital firm. The concept needs to be more simplified according to the audience—doing so can help bring more people to the table.
Why retirement should not depend on selling your practice
DVM360
For many practice owners, the finish line is clear: Build a successful business, sell it (hopefully for a large sum), and use that lump sum to retire. It is usually the default path, but what if the value of your business was not the determining factor in your ability to retire? What intrigues me most about the story I am going to tell today is what we help practice owners do all the time. This is, in fact, one of the major focal points that we try to get clients to focus on. Many people want to do this, but they just do not know how. The concept is clear, but the execution is not easy.
Improving barn ventilation for horses with asthma
The Horse
What can I do to improve ventilation in my barn to help a horse with equine asthma? Horse owners are always looking to improve the air quality in their barns. This becomes more important when you have horses with a respiratory issue. To improve air quality means improving the ventilation in the barn and spaces where the horses spend time.
