FDA update on Baxter intravenous products
FDA
Baxter International began shipments of intravenous products to the United States from two international facilities last week, as it works to bring a hurricane-hit plant in North Carolina back online amid a shortage of the essential medical product. The medical device maker also received the U.S. FDA’s clearance to temporarily import products from five facilities in Canada, China, Ireland, and the UK, and was working to secure authorization for more sites amid a nationwide shortage following flooding of the plant by Hurricane Helene. According to AVMA, FDA is monitoring the situation and has had no report of shortages yet. Besides imports, they’re allowing compounding of products determined to actually be in shortage. They’re aware that the shortage could bleed into the veterinary space. The veterinary distributors are also aware but can’t point to situations where they’ve been unable to get product. FDA and AVMA are keeping touch to share information. FDA is keeping the following page up-to-date: https://www.fda.gov/drugs/updates-2024-hurricane-season/hurricane-helene-baxters-manufacturing-recovery-north-carolina. They have also added a number of items to their shortage list, as well as a list of products that can be imported.

No dire shortage of veterinarians anticipated in coming years
AVMA
A recent analysis of the drivers of supply and demand for veterinary services in the U.S. shows that the number of graduates from existing U.S. veterinary colleges is likely enough to meet demand to 2035. The conclusion comes from a recent analysis performed by Brakke Consulting Inc., which was commissioned by the AVMA. John Volk, a senior analyst with Brakke Consulting, will provide an overview of the report, “Forecasting Supply and Demand Indicators for US Veterinarians 2024-2035,” at the 2024 AVMA Veterinary Business and Economic Forum, October 8-9. The analysis looked at trends in the number of veterinary graduates and pet-owning households as well as consumers’ disposable income and pet spending.
UN prioritizes fight against antimicrobial resistance
AVMA
United Nations (UN) global leaders recently approved a political declaration describing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as “one of the most urgent global health threats and development challenges” and committing member states to a 10% reduction in AMR deaths worldwide by 2030. The UN estimates AMR is directly responsible for 1.3 million human deaths a year.
Heartworm incidence climbs despite preventive efforts
AVMA
Heartworm infection rates across the U.S. have steadily increased for nearly two decades despite the greater availability and efficacy of preventatives. Every three years, the American Heartworm Society (AHS) conducts a survey that looks at reporting clinics and the total dog population. And each time, the number of dogs that have tested positive for heartworm goes up by well over 50,000, says Dr. Doug Carithers, a parasitology expert and board member of the AHS for over 18 years.
US Fish and Wildlife Service rejects Endangered listing for long-tailed macaque
DVM360
The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) recently rejected a petition from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and other advocacy groups seeking to list long-tailed macaque monkeys—Macaca fascicularis—as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The decision concludes a review by USFWS, which determined that the petition lacked credible information of any impacts on long-tailed macaque populations or the species overall from potential threats, whether individually or collectively, that would justify listing the species as endangered.
