Dr. Parminder Basran elected as Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine

The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) is pleased to announce that Dr. Parminder Basran has been elected a Fellow of the Association. The category of Fellow honors members who have distinguished themselves by their contributions in research, education, or leadership in the medical physics community. The award was presented at the 2024 AAPM 66th Annual Meeting & Exhibition on July 22, 2024.
SAVMA HOD updates duty hours guidelines

Newly revised guidelines recommend fewer duty hours per week for veterinary students completing their clinical rotations to promote better wellbeing. The Student AVMA (SAVMA) House of Delegates (HOD) approved revisions to its Duty Hour Guidelines during its June 23 meeting, held concurrently with AVMA Convention 2024, June 21-25 in Austin, Texas. The SAVMA Executive Board subsequently voted on the revised guidelines on August 1 along with a corresponding statement.
AVMF’s REACH charitable care program provides nearly $650,000 to help pets, clients

Dr. Stephen C. Kochis, chief medical officer with the Oregon Humane Society (OHS), recalls a 7-year-old dog with pyometra whose owners couldn’t pay for a life-saving surgery at a nearby specialty veterinary practice. Instead, they came to OHS’s Community Veterinary Hospital in Portland, Oregon, where Dr. Kochis could perform the surgery. The hospital uses various types of funding to help cover costs, including grants from the American Veterinary Medical Foundation’s (AVMF) Reaching Every Animal with Charitable Healthcare (REACH) Program. A $500 grant from the REACH program helped subsidize the surgery.
New study finds cows can transmit avian flu to other mammals

A recent study published byNaturehas shown evidence of multidirectional mammalian interspecies transmission of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1). Specifically, the study revealed cattle-to-cat and cattle-to-raccoon transmission. Investigators conducted a clinic epidemiological investigation across 9 farms in Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, and Ohio that reported morbidity events between February 11, 2024, and March 19, 2024.
Vets explore magnesium oxide’s potential for managing ulcers in horses

Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) poses a significant concern for performance horse owners, especially among racing populations. Omeprazole, the gold-standard treatment for equine squamous gastric disease (ESGD)—lesions in the upper part of the stomach—can be expensive and is available only by prescription. Given ESGD’s clinical and economic impact in racehorses, researchers have suggested an effective feed additive, such as magnesium oxide, could serve as a buffering option.
