Sandra Atlas Bass Endowment advances cancer research through seed grants

Three researchers at the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) recently received a boost for their work on cancer. Dr. Brian Rudd, professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology; Dr. Robert Weiss, professor of molecular genetics; and Dr. Andrew White, associate professor, both in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, are this year’s recipients of seed funding from the Comparative Cancer Biology Program.

Fish biodiversity benefits nutrition, particularly for lower income people

Households caught and consumed a far more diverse array of fish than they sold at market, which has important implications for how loss of biodiversity might affect people’s nutrition, especially for those with lower incomes. The Cornell study is one of the first to examine the relationship between diet and biodiversity in a wild food system.

AAVSB, VMG surveys find lack of support for midlevel practitioner

A 2023 American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) survey found most North American veterinarians and veterinary technicians supported better utilization of credentialed veterinary technicians (CrVTs) as a means to help alleviate veterinary workforce shortages, rather than creating a new midlevel practitioner (MLP).

AVMA updates antimicrobial policies

The AVMA has updated two of its policies concerning the judicious therapeutic use of antimicrobials and endorsed a joint statement from the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) and Academy of Veterinary Consultants (AVC) on the therapeutic use of medically important antimicrobials in cattle.

Managing horses with hives

They might seem benign, those raised welts on your horse’s body. But they can be itchy—even painful under tack and equipment—unsightly, and challenging to manage. Hives, or urticaria, can be a most frustrating condition for both horse owners and veterinarians. To properly understand how to treat hives, it is important to realize the condition is not a dermatological disease on its own. Rather it is a cutaneous reaction pattern that is not specifically associated with one etiology, says Jonathan Yardley, DVM, an associate professor in Equine Field Services at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, in Columbus.
