Oma’s Pride of Avon, Connecticut, is voluntarily recalling one lot of Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe, 6 lb bag (Lot BB012729) because it is contaminated withSalmonella. The recall was initiated after FDA received a consumer complaint and subsequently collected and analyzed a sample of the product, which tested positive forSalmonella. Oma’s Pride is continuing with their investigation to determine the source and root cause of the contamination. Three illnesses in dogs have been reported to date in association with the complaint.

APHIS confirms scrapie case in Oregon, setting back eradication efforts

After a decades-long effort to eradicate this fatal, degenerative prion disease, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed on July 31 a case of classical scrapie in a sheep slaughtered at a facility in Oregon. The animal was tested as part of USDA’s ongoing national scrapie surveillance program, which is designed to identify classical scrapie in sheep and goats at slaughter facilities. The USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) confirmed classical scrapie after a genotype analysis and further testing.

Utah State completes veterinary education building as four-year program expands

Utah State University has completed construction of the Thomas and Patricia Willis Veterinary Medical Education Building, a milestone in the university’s effort to expand veterinary education and help address shortages of veterinarians across Utah. The new facility will serve as the cornerstone of USU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, providing classrooms, laboratories and clinical training spaces designed to support hands-on education, research and collaboration.
