Veterinary students present capstone presentations at the 2022 National Veterinary Scholars Symposium

DVM360

Almost 600 veterinary students from across 3 dozen veterinary schools within the United States, France, Germany, and the Netherlands presented their summer research experience by presenting their findings at the National Veterinary Scholars Symposium at the University of Minnesota. This program gives veterinary students hands-on research experience in laboratories and fields from public and private organizations and government and academic agencies. Sydney Womack from Cornell University’s College of Veterinary medicine was the recipient of the 2022 Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Research Award For Veterinary students. Her research focused on the exploration of proteomics across species to identify potential biomarkers for osteoarthritis in animals and humans.

Evidence of human-to-dog transmission of monkeypox virus

The Lancet

Human monkeypox virus is spreading in Europe and the USA among individuals who have not travelled to endemic areas. On July 23, 2022, monkeypox was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Human-to-human transmission of monkeypox virus usually occurs through close contact with the lesions, body fluids, and respiratory droplets of infected people or animals. The possibility of sexual transmission is being investigated, as the current outbreak appears to be concentrated in men who have sex with men and has been associated with unexpected anal and genital lesions. Whether domesticated cats and dogs could be a vector for monkeypox virus is unknown. Here we describe the first case of a dog with confirmed monkeypox virus infection that might have been acquired through human transmission.

Mini donkey gets big boost from pacemaker

Cornell University CVM

At three months old, Nix the miniature donkey should have been rambunctious and full of energy. Instead, she was regularly collapsing due to a severe heart condition. To treat this often fatal illness, veterinarians at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals successfully implanted a pacemaker in Nix. It is the first surgery of its kind in a large animal species at Cornell.

Three candidates declare for AVMA’s top spot

AVMA

The race for 2023-24 AVMA president-elect will have plenty of competition as three individuals have announced their candidacy for the position—the first time in recent memory. Dr. Sandra Faeh Butler, 2020-22 AVMA vice president; Dr. Arnold L. Goldman, 2017-23 AVMA treasurer; and Dr. Robert Murtaugh, a former chair of the AVMA American Board of Veterinary Specialties, launched their campaigns July 29 during the regular annual session of the AVMA House of Delegates in Philadelphia, which took place in conjunction with AVMA Convention 2022.

AVMA recognizes three for work in human-animal bond and welfare

AVMA

The AVMA presented three awards July 29 at AVMA Convention 2022 in Philadelphia to recognize work with the human-animal bond and animal welfare. The Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year Award recognizes the outstanding work of an AVMA member in preserving and protecting the human-animal bond. The AVMA Animal Welfare Award and AVMA Humane Award recognize an AVMA member and a nonveterinarian, respectively, for achievement in advancing the welfare of animals via leadership, public service, education, research, product development, or advocacy.

Study: Judges favor fat ponies over lean ones

The Horse

Veterinarians have long warned of the dangers of equine obesity and promoted maintaining horses at a healthy body condition. But an influential sector in the horse industry might favor ponies with a Thelwell-esque physique: show judges. In a recently published study, researchers reported a positive correlation between higher body condition scores (BCS) and the scores ponies received from judges evaluating the animals’ conformation and appearance.
