Cornell faculty, staff recognized with SUNY Chancellor’s awards

Eighteen faculty and staff members across Cornell’s state contract colleges have been named recipients of the 2025–26State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence. In addition, Roger Figueroa of the College of Human Ecology (CHE) received a SUNY Chancellor’s Horizon Award for Faculty Research and Scholarship, a distinction honoring emerging academic leaders across the SUNY system.

FSIS moving to Iowa as part of USDA reorganization

Plans to move U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) operations outside of Washington, D.C., and into agriculture regions throughout the U.S. continue apace. The latest announcement shared that USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is getting a new home in Iowa. In an April 23 press release, the USDA said the new National Food Safety Center (NFSC) in Urbandale, Iowa, will be the primary FSIS headquarters location, supporting resource management, training, food safety education, financial operations, information technology, and administrative services.

A flesh-eating cattle parasite is spreading in Texas as new far-flung screwworm cases are found

Two more cases of the New World screwworm have been confirmed hundreds of miles apart in Texas, demonstrating the difficulty of stopping the spread of a pest that could potentially devastate the nation’s cattle industry, the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The screwworm is actually a fly larva that eats living flesh instead of dead material. Females lay their eggs in open wounds of warm-blooded animals like cattle, but wildlife, pets and occasionally even humans can be infested.

Survey on the occurrence of blastomycosis and histoplasmosis in veterinary practice in NYS

The Bureau of Communicable Disease Control at the New York State Department of Health, are conducting a brief survey to better understand the occurrence of blastomycosis and histoplasmosis in veterinary practice across the state. The survey focuses on case frequency, clinical signs, diagnostic approaches, and seasonal trends, and should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. We encourage responses from all veterinary professionals, even if no cases have been diagnosed at your clinic. The information collected will help improve understanding of these diseases and will be shared with the veterinary community to highlight areas of higher occurrence and support increased awareness among veterinarians and physicians.
