A woman of many firsts: Renowned avian expert Jarra Jagne, DVM ’90, awarded college’s highest alumni honor

When Jarra Jagne, DVM ’90, was growing up in her native country of The Gambia, she was exposed to its rural areas and large populations of livestock during summer vacations accompanying her father on work trips. This fostered a fascination for animals, later heightened by an encounter with the famous James Herriot book, All Creatures Great and Small, which fueled her veterinary calling. “I imagined myself as a James Herriot in Gambia’s rural savanna saving the lives of cows, sheep, goats, and chickens,” says Jagne.

Congress overhauls federal student loan program

President Donald Trump has signed a budget reconciliation bill into law that contains many student loan provisions of note. The overall bill reflects bipartisan consensus on the need to rein in federal lending and strengthen accountability in higher education. Total federal student loan debt has tripled since 2007 and currently sits at $1.64 trillion owed by approximately 42.7 million borrowers, according to research site Best Colleges. The debt total climbs to $1.77 trillion when accounting for private student debt. Borrowers’ average federal student loan debt was just over $38,000 at the end of 2024, the site stated.

Digital pet ID may make metal tags thing of the past

Over the past decade, the metal pet ID tag has undergone a high-tech makeover. Tags that once provided basic details about a pet and its owner now feature GPS and Bluetooth capabilities as well as QR codes linking users to more detailed contact information and pet medical records. Digital ID tags are being used by pet owners, animal shelters, and veterinary clinics, along with municipalities that distribute rabies and pet license tags.
