Buoy’s Law Changes – Bill A6996 introduced

Buoy’s Law was passed during the 2022 legislative session, and requires veterinarians to provide information to clients about common adverse side-effects.

We are excited to see Assembly bill A.6996 introduced in the NY State Assembly, sponsored by Assemblymember Monica P. Wallace. This bill was drafted by NYSVMS and we are the leading advocate moving it forward.

The bill will amend Buoy’s law to:

  • Apply just to dogs, cats and rabbits
  • Apply to the initial prescription – not refills
  • Applies only to prescribing and dispensing – not to use in the hospital.
  • Extends the implementation date to June 2024

We have prepared support for the passage of the bill through conversations with legislative leadership and the NYSED and anticipate a smooth passage.

We also expect a Senate version to be introduced soon.

Once we have more information, we may be sending out supporting materials for you to send to your legislative representatives.
