There is a new documentary called Iowa Vet: Dogs, Cats, Corn & Murder, opening at Cinema Village (22 E. 12th St. in New York City) June 5 running through June 18. Each screening will be followed by a live Q&A with NYSVMS member Alan Younkin, DVM. The film is about a veterinarian reflecting on growing up on an Iowa farm, building an animal hospital in the big city, confronting the upheavals transforming his profession and navigating the unexpected chapters that helped shape his life. Jessica McArt named dean of College of Veterinary Medicine

Dr.Jessica McArt, DVM ’07, Ph.D. ’13, has been named the Austin O. Hooey Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), effective July 15. Her appointment was approved May 20 by the Cornell Board of Trustees’ Executive Committee and ratified June 2 by the State University of New York’s Board of Trustees.

CVM honors 2026 graduates in hooding, recognition ceremonies

This May, the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine celebrated its newest group of veterinarians, scientists and public health professionals as they embarked on the next stage of their careers. During the hooding ceremony Dr. Jeanne Best, president of the New York State Veterinary Medical Society, led the graduates in taking the Veterinarian’s Oath before Jai Sweet, Ph.D. ’96, assistant dean for veterinary student services and admissions, then called each graduate to the stage to be hooded.

The inaugural event, titled: “From Assessment to Feedback: Closing the Loop in Clinical Education in the Health Professions,” convened educators and students from medicine, veterinary medicine, physician assistant studies and licensed veterinary technician training for two days of medical education programming.

Student loan repayment is changing July 1st

The coming changes stem from legislation approved by Congress and signed into law in 2025. They include the phase-out of some repayment plans, creation of two new ones, and new limits on federal borrowing. Current and future students and veterinarians using certain federal loan repayment plans will be affected, as will anyone continuing their education with the aid of federal student loans.
