NYSVMS recruiting for class of 2027 Power of 10

NYSVMS is currently recruiting for the Power of 10 class of 2027. This is a national initiative designed to cultivate leadership capacity in grads 15 years or less from veterinary school who are current NYSVMS members and provide learning experiences that will enrich the individual and benefit the individual’s practice, community and profession. The program provides NYSVMS members with 4 leadership development sessions. NYSVMS provides the experts and covers all meeting and travel expenses for participants to attend sessions. The topics were: wellbeing, what to do when OPD knocks on your door, restructuring student debt and financial planning and the Insights Discovery program. New path for old protein may present additional therapies for rare genetic disease

A new study from scientists at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine has revealed interesting insights that can help with new therapeutic approaches for a rare genetic disease. Cystinosis is uncommon but serious causing an amino acid called cystine to build up in cells, eventually causing kidney failure. The condition is caused by mutations in the protein cystinosin whose normal function is to prevent cystine build-up. Limited treatments exist for the disease, and many patients end up requiring dialysis or kidney transplants.

With end-of-life care, ‘clear is kind’

How veterinarians handle end-of-life (EOL) conversations with owners about pet euthanasia may matter as much as their clinical skills. Higher-rated veterinary communication was associated with lower decisional regret, defined as “retrospective doubt about the timing or manner of EOL decisions,” according to an April 29 study published in Human-Animal Interactions. Investigators surveyed 802 dog and cat owners in the U.S. who had participated in an EOL decision-making for a pet within the prior two years.
As World Rabies Day turns 20, CDC data show threat persists

While the U.S. has been free of canine-mediated rabies since 2007, the disease remains widespread globally, causing an estimated 59,000 human deaths each year. Four human rabies deaths were reported in 2024, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) annual rabies surveillance report, “Rabies Surveillance in the United States During 2024,” which was published online August 31 in JAVMA.

Weekly human emergency room visits for tick bites hit their highest levels for this time of year in nearly a decade this summer, with every US region except the South Central states posting rates not seen since tracking began in 2017, according to data the CDC released in the spring.
