The Horse

Laminitis is a very serious condition in horses that is often associated with metabolic problems, especially insulin dysregulation (ID). “Obese horses may be at higher risk for becoming ID and suffering from laminitis, but lean animals can also develop laminitis, especially if they are insulin-dysregulated,” said Patricia Harris, PhD, VetMB, Dipl. ECVCN, MRCVS, during her presentation at the 2023 American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine forum, held June 15-17 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Contagious omicron strain replicates early in infection

Cornell University CVM

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, the SARS-CoV-2 virus has produced a number of variants, including alpha, beta, delta and omicron, each with its own subvariants. New research, published Sept. 22 in Science Advances, used engineered mice to compare SARS-COV-2 omicron subvariants, and found one of them, BA.5, was more virulent likely due to its ability to rapidly replicate early during infection.

How does insulin dysregulation work in horses and how do vets treat it?

The Horse

Horses with insulin dysregulation (ID) and hyperinsulinemia are at a greater risk of developing other metabolic problems, such as equine metabolic syndrome, and laminitis secondary to these conditions. Researchers are still working to understand the mechanisms of these diseases, but they believe insulin thresholds for the onset of laminitis likely vary between individual horses based on body mass and preexisting damage to the lamellar tissues that suspend the coffin bone within the hoof.
